What Are Your Aquatic Weed Control Options?
There is very little individuals enjoy any more than a little plant killing, especially in their pond, or even the fishpond wherein it would make major problems for the fish as well as you. Fish don’t like moving through a massive forest just like any other creature, therefore it is best to keep a handle on the plants at the bottom of your pond, before some of them turn into the carnivorous plant from Jumanji.
An overgrowth of aquatic plants may create problems all the way from watercraft motors getting clogged, to bad results when fishing, to kids having a horrible time trying to swim in your pond. None of those are things you desire, so it’s best to eradicate the root of the issue before it even begins if you can.
You’ve a few options at your disposal, options which go from biological control, meaning the use of fish that simply control the aquatic life population, to covering your whole pond with a plastic lining…that seems a rather drastic step, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
So let’s review a couple of the choices, and after that you may choose which one is best for you, but remember that the following are just a very few options, and you should speak with different pond owners, or professionals to learn about every single choice available to you.
Harvesting – Ridding yourself of the plants through manual labor, is of course a great choice. Of course, if the plant isn’t on the shore, or isn’t|is not on the top of the water, you might find yourself buying some scuba equipment to get down there without drowning. If you don’t know the dynamics of scuba diving, or can’t hold your breath for a long time, it is encouraged for you to get a hold of the professionals. As a matter of fact, there’s companies that work to clean the bottom of ponds and lakes, so you’ll be pretty well off.
Chemicals – There’s a lot of chemicals available for you to use in order to get rid of the pesky plant life. Some such of these chemicals are Fluridone,2,4-D, Glyphosate, Diquat, Endothall. Naturally though, it’s not encouraged that you utilize any kind of chemical to kill off your plant life, which isn’t dissimilar to the reason it is never advised for you to toss a live wire into the lake to catch the prize fish. Utilizing chemicals can prove detrimental for fish, in addition to any other life you might have residing in your pond. Use these carefully, or better yet, do not use them at all unless you absolutely have to.
Dye – You could purchase a huge selection of chemicals which would tint the color of your water, and therefore lower the amount of sun for any water plants. It’s better to do such at the beginning of spring for best results.
Lining – Covering the bottom of the pond with a type of plastic is also an choice, this would halt the development of any sort of aquatic plant life. Remember that it may get expensive, therefore take into account the volume of the pond, in addition to the amount of plastic you will need. Of course that is a good choice for small fish ponds, though perhaps not so much for a whole lake in the backyard.
Don’t forget that there’s tons of methods to halt plant life from invading your pond, and to discover the method which is right for you, consult an expert or talk to other pond keepers.
