A Comparison Between Land Line Phone Service and Digital Phone Service
VoIP phone service, also known as internet telephone service, works by connecting your regular telephone to the internet. Your telephone calls are then sent over the internet as small bits of information, called packets, instead of them being sent over an old fashioned phone wire. This type of telephone service has the following pros and cons:
Internet Phone Service Pros:
• You can save at least 25% on taxes and fees alone.
• “Local Calling Only” service plans are very cheap.
• You can take your VoIP phone with you when you travel around the world, and call back to the US and Canada for free.
• You can get a phone number with any US area code and prefix.
• Voice-mail, Caller ID and other calling features are usually included with each plan.
Internet Phone Service Cons:
• VoIP phone service goes down when your internet goes down.
• 911 doesn’t work on your internet telephone service when your internet service is not working
Land line phone service is where a regular phone line is hooked to your home by a phone provider. While cable companies do install telephone service into homes and offices, they provide what they call “Digital Phone Service”. Digital phone service is just a fancy name for internet telephone service. Land line phone service has the following pros and cons:
Regular Phone Service Pros:
• Land line phone service is technically more stable than internet telephone service.
• Your regular phone number gets put in the phone book, while your internet telephone service phone number doesn’t.
• Landline phone signals, overall, sound better than internet telephone service.
• Land line phone service provider’s 911 service works better.
• High speed internet service isn’t required for your landline phones to work.
Regular Phone Service Cons:
• Taxes and fees can easily be over 25% of a landline phone bill.
• Only works in your home or office.
• Requires other choices for international travel. Calling cards, cell phones, pay phones.
While trying to be fair with the pros and cons of landline phone service and VoIP phone service, it is getting so that the only reason to still have a old fashioned telephone plan is because you either can’t get high speed internet service, or you really need to make sure the sound of your call is good. But, with most people now using either landline phone service, or cell phones, trying to get the last 1% of call clarity isn’t worth it any more.
